We can’t think of a better combination for a luxury Windermere break than a stay with us and some foodie trips out. And we love a chandelier and inspiring interiors here at the Windermere Suites, so the Gaddum at Brockhole was an obvious choice for one of our lunch or afternoon tea reviews.

The restaurant decor is gorgeous they have gone with the history of the building and picked an Arts and Craft style which has been done really well and even though it was the beginning of September they had the fire lit and it felt lovely and cosy.

The girl working there was really welcoming and friendly. It was quiet as it was a Monday but I would highly recommend booking ahead so that you don’t miss out at busier times.

Matilda had the Cumbrian Beef and cracked wheat salad and I had the Pan fried Seabass. The presentation was stunning from the glassware and crockery to the cutlery choices, and most importantly the food was every bit as tasty as it looked. The potatoes that came to accompany the main course had a delicious wild garlic mayonnaise drizzled on them …heavenly.

We opted for puddings instead of starters and Matilda had her favourite Sticky Toffee (just look at that sauce!) and I had the Donut (this is definitely not a donut as you may think you know it!).

What’s truly fantastic about this restaurant is that it’s part of Brockhole, now managed by the Lake District National Park Authority but once the home the Gaddum family. As you enjoy your lunch in the beautiful Arts and Crafts inspired setting, there are terrific views of Lake Windermere, the gardens, and the backdrop of the Lake District. We really are so lucky to be located in the heart of this world-class landscape!

Located less than a five minute walk away from our boutique hotel Windermere Suites, is the newly-opened San Pietro’s restaurant. Combining a mixture of Sicilian heritage with modern techniques – how could we resist trying it out for ourselves?

We chose to head down for an early dinner at 5pm, which would be perfect for anyone who’s in need of some delicious food after a busy day exploring the Lake District.

Either that or take some time relaxing in your Suite then stroll over for a romantic evening meal for two.

Situated in the old Giotto’s restaurant, San Pietro’s is owned by the wonderful chef Jason Turner who has previously worked with Marco Pierre White. If that’s still not enough to convince you to go, then just have a look at the photos of the delicious food on offer. They also have some fantastic reviews on TripAdvisor.

My personal favourite was the seafood linguini with mussels and prawns and I will be recommending this to any seafood lovers staying at our boutique hotel in the Lake District! It was flavoursome, filling and complemented my glass of wine perfectly.

San Pietro’s is merely a stone’s throw away from Windermere Suites and is now definitely up there as one of our favourite local restaurants. With lovely staff and delicious food in a wonderful setting, it’s a must visit during your stay in the Lake District.

Here at Windermere Suites we’re more than happy to recommend places to eat and drink during your stay with us – in fact, our team of testers is more than happy trying out all these wonderful places. We love sharing our favourite spots with all of our guests, so don’t hesitate to ask!

We’ve recently been researching lunch and afternoon tea options for our guests enjoying a Windermere stay. Our handy location in Windermere village means we are an easy walk from a great selection of eateries – from casual bistros and traditional pubs to more formal restaurants.

The 1st Floor Cafe at Lakeland was one of our first review stops (I had help from my daughter Matilda, who is happy to share the load when it comes to scouting great places to eat and drink!). The cake counter is an immediate distraction as you can see.

When we arrived it was busy in the café but we still got a table and didn’t have to wait long for friendly service. When the menu arrived, the savoury choices were just as appealing as the cake counter. I tried one of the vegetarian options as the menu had some excellent choices: the Chickpea Falafel Burger.

I’m so glad I did as it was delicious! Matilda chose the Sticky Sesame Korean Chicken which she tells me tasted just as good as it looked.

windermere stay brunch review

Top tip 1: This is a great spot for guests arriving by, or waiting for, the train as it is right by the train station.

Top tip 2: If you’re staying with us near Christmas, you can combine lunch with some shopping downstairs in the iconic Lakeland store (we particularly love some of their foodie stocking filler ideas and the recipe book selection).

Lakeland – Part of Your Windermere Stay

Lakeland is a fantastic store for those of us who love a bit of retail therapy with a focus on the kitchen. Here’s how Lakeland describe themselves:

“As one of the UK’s home shopping pioneers with over 50 years of experience under our belts, Lakeland offer an unrivalled collection of creative kitchenware, practical ideas for the home and garden, and inspiring gifts from all over the world. Our Buyers search for innovative products that make life easier, before putting them through a rigorous selection and testing process to ensure they meet our exacting standards.

From everyday utensils and preserving basics, to never-seen-before cookware; if they’ve made it into our range, you can be sure they’ll be long-lasting and offer great value for money. We are so confident of this that every item is backed by our guarantee, if you’re not delighted with your purchase or our service, or find the same product elsewhere for less, please tell us so that we can put it right. It’s this kind of dedication to service that has gained us such a loyal customer following over the years.”

Leave a bit of time either side of brunch or lunch to wander downstairs and pick up a few home treats!

We understand that with so much choice, it can be hard to decide where to go – so we work hard to ensure you can make the most of your time at our luxury hotel in the Lakes!

We recently visited The Pig Windermere – what a treat! With a menu specialising in all things pork, we couldn’t resist paying it a visit. Their classic British menu focuses on fresh, local produce and pork in all its forms.

luxury hotel

We highly recommend the ‘Pig Feast’ pizza, and by looking at reviews on their TripAdvisor – it seems as though there are plenty of others who would agree with us! Think of a homemade pizza base topped with sucking pig, smoked ham, pigs in blankets, tomato base, mozzarella and fresh herbs. And yes, it does taste as good as it sounds!

luxury hotel

If you’re not a fan of pork, or you’re a vegetarian, don’t worry – there are plenty of other options available with a menu designed to suit all tastes. The Pig pride themselves on their selection of Gluten Free options too, so they really do have something for everyone. The warm goat’s cheese salad with oven roasted mixed beets, vine tomatoes, sautéed potatoes and chargrilled peppers looked to die for!

We love that Windermere is full of so many amazing restaurants and bars. Over the years we have come to collect a few absolute favourites – and Hooked is definitely one of them. A delightful little seafood restaurant that’s just two-minutes away from our luxury bed & breakfast Windermere is certainly the place to stay for great food!

Hooked prides itself on having the freshest and tastiest seafood in town, with flavours and influences from the Mediterranean, South East Asia and Australasia. The seasonal menu changes daily depending on availability of their fresh seafood, so you’re in for a treat any time you go.

You can expect lots of local specialities at Hooked, some of my personal favourites are the Morecambe Bay potted shrimps, and the whole roasted seabass. Everything is packed full of flavour and a real treat for the taste buds.

Everything that appears on your plate at Hooked is made with pride and passion by their fabulous chefs. It doesn’t have to end with your main course though – Hooked have a fabulous selection of tempting desserts. Their vanilla panna cotta truly is something special, if you’re a desert lover then you have to try it!

At Windermere Suites, we take pleasure in discovering the best of the best to recommend to the guests of our boutique hotel – even if this means having to go for a three-course meal every now and then!

We recently visited Francine’s Coffee House & Restaurant – a lovely little bistro-style restaurant just a two-minute walk from the Suites. Francine’s is a long-standing favourite bistro in the village, and we can definitely understand why.

boutique hotel

I couldn’t resist the pan seared scallops served with homemade black pudding, pommes puree, chicken veloute sauce and basil oil – and I wasn’t disappointed. This, followed by the Francine’s seafood casserole from the ever-changing specials board, and I was in seafood heaven!

boutique hotel

Even though we were very full after our main courses – in the interest of sharing with you how lovely the desserts were too, we sacrificed our waistlines. Francine’s chocolate and almond sachertote was to die for, and I couldn’t get enough of my vanilla crème brulee.

If only the photos we took were scratch-and-sniff pictures because our mouths were watering before we started eating – it looks like you’ll just have to try Francine’s out for yourself!

A Lake District winter break is the perfect opportunity to explore the area and take in some of the amazing views that our local landscape has to offer. And even though it’s a little chilly at times, there are plenty of places to warm up and enjoy a seasonal treat after your adventures.

Here are our top five spots for winter warmers in the Lake District:

1. Room service

Our own room service menu is a great option for those of you who enjoy a winter adventure – you can head back to your Suite and choose something tasty to enjoy in the privacy of your room. Add in a bubbly air bath for two and a cosy up on the sofa and your Lake District winter break is close to perfection.

2. The Pig, Windermere

Discover this cosy bar and restaurant specialising in all things pork. The meat is sourced locally and we highly recommend the hog roast, which is cooked daily on the rotisserie. In spite of the name, there are loads of non-pork dishes to tempt you. And we love their ‘skinny champagne’ – bubbles without the calories.

3. The Fizzy Tarte, Windermere

Add a classy Windermere venue to your winter adventure with a visit to The Fizzy Tarte. This stylish cocktail bar in an elegant setting adds a splash of baileys, rum or whisky in your choice of classic or white hot chocolate – what a luxurious way to warm up and indulge yourself.

4. Country Hut, Bowness

Be sure to stop by the Country Hut in Bowness. A cute, wood-panelled café bar that’s ideal for a quick cuppa or hot chocolate. Equally, it’s a lovely place for a more leisurely stop involving cocktails and a cheese and meat platter too!

5. The Albert, Bowness

Two words: Sunday Lunch. Head down to Bowness for one of the best roasts that you’ll find locally.
