Stunning B&B

"Have just spent one night at this property and it’s the most stunning B&B I’ve stayed in and I’ve stayed in a lot! The staff could not do enough and made us feel very welcome! The room was spotless and spacious, breakfast was sent to our room which is just a lovely to not have to get up and dressed to go for breakfast and the breakfast was delicious. I cannot fault this place at all and will definitely be coming again. Thanks so much." Read more

Absolutely beautiful

"We just returned from a one night stay in the Bowness Suite and it was absolutely beautiful. The service and attentiveness of Vicky the owner was second to none. We were greeted with such a lovely welcome and asked to sit on a sofa in a beautiful room whilst Vicky told us about the hotel and our suite, and recommended nearby restaurants for us. The suite itself was beautiful with everything you could ask for. The bath was out of this world with a bathroom TV which was fantastic! The shower was equally brilliant along with the amazing lighting in the bathroom. The bed was huge and exceptionally comfy. We had breakfast in our suite which was delivered through the secret hatch so no one even had to come in to our room. Breakfast itself was excellent and there was a great choice beforehand. The walk in wardrobe was a great addition with a well-stocked minbar that was reasonably priced. The Bowness Suite had its own private entrance at the rear of the hotel with a patio, so we didn't even have to walk through the hotel itself to get to our room which was great. An exceptional hotel."

Amazing!

"This place is seriously nice. We stayed in the Bowness Suite for a week and enjoyed every second we spent in the room. We'd have happily spent more time in there. Staff were polite, welcoming and friendly without being cloying or obsequious. Nothing was too much trouble; an umbrella was provided on arrival; ice arrived within seconds of a request; spare keys were provided when we left ours in the wrong car; breakfast arriving punctually in the serving hatch and was unfailingly generous. We worked our way through most of the menu during the week. Particularly impressive were the Porridge, the Eggs Benedict and of course, the Full Cumberland (with perfectly poached eggs). Discretion when paying was shown; other guests were present and as we were on honeymoon I was pleased my wife wasn't forced to hear the amount I had spent! Flowers were exactly as requested and there didn't seem to be a huge mark-up on them. The room was kept spotlessly clean and the jacuzzi bath was amazing, especially with the lighting controls; though we got a bit over-enthusiastic with the heated flooring! The mini-bar was well-stocked, and although we didn’t use it much, the prices were not extortionate. Plenty of hanging space and drawer space in the walk-in wardrobe. We used the free entry to the Old England Hotel Spa - this was completely worth it and we even had 10% off treatments."

Stay was not long enough

"We spent two nights in the Bowness suite and it was not long enough, the room was spotless the breakfast was perfect as it was filling. We were made comfortable as soon as we met Vicky at reception and were made to feel really welcome. Jan and myself have stayed at a few 5* hotels in both London and Manchester but Windermere suites come out on top and you definitely get what you pay for - luxury."

Things to do

If you’re not climbing Orrest Head, you could hire a rowing boat or motor cruiser from the main Bowness Pier. Or take a cruise on one of the large Lake Cruisers to Lakeside or Ambleside. There are several pubs and restaurants in the town as well as excellent shops. Other attractions include the Blackwell Arts and Crafts House, a great find for those interested in design.

    Bowness and our 'Bowness' Suite

We’ve given each of our luxury suites a Lake District name. And, as tempted as you may be to not to leave this cocoon of luxury, we’ve provided some information in case you want to venture out. Bowness is on the lake but Windermere is not. The Windermere Suites is between the two and the walk down to the lake is a gentle ten minute stroll.

    The setting

Bowness bustles all year round with people enjoying trips on the lake or wandering around its busy and interesting streets. Located on the shore of Lake Windermere it is Cumbria’s most popular tourist destination. In the Victorian era, many industrialists from Lancashire chose to build grand mansions with waterside access and views on to the lake. Intended to impress and outdo their neighbour, these wealthy individuals have left us with a wonderful legacy of very fine architecture.

    Did you know

Bowness is thought to be the lakeside town of Rio in Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons. Windermere is England’s largest lake stretching from Newby Bridge in the south to Ambleside in the north, a distance of over 10 miles. Its official name is Windermere, not Lake Windermere. The National Park website has some useful information

    Famous people

Arthur Ransome based the fictional North Lake in Swallows and Amazons on Windermere and Coniston Water. Peter Rabbit, Mrs Tiggywinkle, Jemima Puddleduck and all their friends can be seen in The World of Beatrix Potter attraction in the village. Alfred Wainwright first saw the peaks and fells of the Lake District from Orrest Head, a short climb from the centre of Windermere.
