Bowness and our 'Bowness' Suite
We’ve given each of our luxury suites a Lake District name. And, as tempted as you may be to not to leave this cocoon of luxury, we’ve provided some information in case you want to venture out. Bowness is on the lake but Windermere is not. The Windermere Suites is between the two and the walk down to the lake is a gentle ten minute stroll.
The setting
Bowness bustles all year round with people enjoying trips on the lake or wandering around its busy and interesting streets. Located on the shore of Lake Windermere it is Cumbria’s most popular tourist destination. In the Victorian era, many industrialists from Lancashire chose to build grand mansions with waterside access and views on to the lake. Intended to impress and outdo their neighbour, these wealthy individuals have left us with a wonderful legacy of very fine architecture.
Did you know
Bowness is thought to be the lakeside town of Rio in Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons. Windermere is England’s largest lake stretching from Newby Bridge in the south to Ambleside in the north, a distance of over 10 miles. Its official name is Windermere, not Lake Windermere. The National Park website has some useful information
Famous people
Arthur Ransome based the fictional North Lake in Swallows and Amazons on Windermere and Coniston Water. Peter Rabbit, Mrs Tiggywinkle, Jemima Puddleduck and all their friends can be seen in The World of Beatrix Potter attraction in the village. Alfred Wainwright first saw the peaks and fells of the Lake District from Orrest Head, a short climb from the centre of Windermere.
